Hydraulic rock drill and splitter is an advanced, often excavator-mounted, attachment that performs two primary functions sequentially: rock drilling and hydraulic splitting. Compared to using a separate rock drill and a standalone hydraulic splitter unit, the integrated system streamlines the entire workflow. The drilling unit typically employs a high-frequency hydraulic impactor and a rotating device to rapidly bore precise, small-diameter holes into the rock face. Immediately following this, the splitting unit—comprising a central wedge and counter wedges—is inserted, and an ultra-high-pressure hydraulic cylinder applies an enormous, controlled expansion force to fracture the rock from the inside out. This static breaking method is what sets it apart from percussive hydraulic hammers, which rely on impact.

Integrated Rock Drill and Splitter Features
- Blasting Free Operation
The most paramount feature is its non-explosive operation. This makes it the preferred method for projects in densely populated urban areas, near existing infrastructure, or within sensitive geological sites. - Low Vibration and Noise Emission
By utilizing a static, internal force to break the rock, the hydraulic rock drill and splitter generates negligible vibration and dramatically reduced noise compared to blasting or hydraulic hammering. This is crucial for construction near residential buildings, hospitals, tunnels, or historical structures where vibration limits are strictly enforced. - Exceptional Power and Efficiency
It can generate splitting forces, easily overcoming the low tensile strength of hard rock. The combination of fast drilling and instantaneous splitting significantly boosts overall excavation efficiency. - Multi Purpose Integration
The excavator provides the necessary motive power, mobility, and multi-angle working capability, allowing the operator to position precisely for drilling and splitting on vertical, horizontal, or inclined surfaces.
Structural Components of Rock Drill and Splitter
- The Hydraulic Rock Drill Unit
This part includes a high-power hydraulic impactor that delivers rapid, high-frequency blows to the drill rod, combined with a rotation motor for material removal. Key elements are the impact piston, shank adapter, and the drill rod/bit. - The Hydraulic Splitter Unit
The splitter gun or cylinder houses the ultra-high pressure components. It consists of: - The Hydraulic Cylinder: Converts hydraulic fluid pressure into linear mechanical force.
- The Plug or Central Wedge: A tapered piece that is driven forward by the piston.
- The Feathers or Counter Wedges: Two side plates that fit around the plug. As the plug moves forward, it forces the feathers outwards against the walls of the pre-drilled hole.

Hydraulic Rock Drill and Splitter Applications
- Mining and Quarrying
For the extraction of valuable dimension stone or minerals, clean separation of large rock blocks without the micro-fracturing caused by explosives is required, preserving the material’s integrity and value. It is also used for secondary splitting of oversized boulders. - Urban Demolition and Excavation
In city environments, hydraulic rock drill and splitter is the ideal tool for foundation excavation in hard rock, basement construction, trenching for utilities, and controlled demolition of concrete and rock structures where blasting is simply not permitted. - Tunneling and Underground Works
It is indispensable for advancing headings in tunnels and underground mines, especially in areas where ventilation and structural safety prohibit explosives. Its compact design when mounted on a carrier allows it to operate effectively in confined spaces. - Infrastructure and Utilities
Building roads, bridge foundations, and pipelines often requires breaking through rock layers. The integrated drill and splitter offers a fast, precise, and safe way to clear rock for civil engineering projects.
Working Principle
The efficacy of the hydraulic rock drill and splitter is rooted in a fundamental principle of rock mechanics: rock has very high compressive strength but relatively low tensile strength. The process focuses on exploiting this weakness.
- Step 1: Precision Drilling
First, the hydraulic drill unit is activated. The high-frequency impact of the hydraulic hammer, combined with rapid rotation, rapidly bores a hole of a specified diameter and depth into the rock mass. The hole size is determined by the specifications of the splitter tool being used. This hole creates an internal, confined space for the immense force to be applied. - Step 2: Insertion and Positioning
The drill bit is retracted, and the splitter assembly (plug and feathers) is positioned and inserted into the pre-drilled hole. The feathers are typically oriented in the direction where the controlled break is desired, usually parallel to the nearest free surface (an existing open face of the rock). - Step 3: Generating Splitting Force
The operator activates the hydraulic system’s splitting mode. The ultra-high-pressure hydraulic fluid flows into the cylinder, causing the piston to drive the tapered central plug forward between the two counter feathers. - Step 4: Internal Fracture
As the plug forces the feathers outwards, an exponentially large lateral expansion force is exerted onto the inner walls of the drill hole. This force overcomes the rock’s tensile strength, creating internal stresses that manifest as a clean, instantaneous crack. The fracture propagates rapidly between the drill holes, breaking the rock into manageable, smaller blocks. This controlled, non-explosive break is highly efficient and safe.
